HOW WE GOT TO CLOUDCROFT My husband, Bill, and I are both retired professionals. Bill's was dentist and Air Force officer and I was a Realtor, who specialized in corporate and military relocation. Bill grew up in Erie, PA and I grew up in Georgetown, Washington, D.C. We met while Bill was attending Georgetown Dental School. We married in 1964, about a year before Bill graduated from dental school. After graduation, Bill spent two years with the Navy in Beaufort, SC. Our son, Chris, was born while we were stationed there. Besides being a dental officer, Bill shot skeet with the Navy Skeet Shooting Team and he traveled all over the US with the Navy team shooting in various events. After serving two years with the Navy, Bill opened a dental practice in Pompano Beach, FL in the late 1960's where our second son, Scott, was born. However, after five years Bill decided that private practice was not for him and he joined the Air Force. Our first Air Force assignment was in Denver, CO. This is where we first fell in love with the mountains. We loved Colorado, but we were only able to live there for two years because Bill was selected by the Air Force to go to graduate school at UT in Houston, and finish up at Wilford Hall in San Antonio. From there we were assigned to Kadena AFB in Okinawa for three years. While there, we became very good friends with the pilots and crews of the SR-71 reconnaissance planes. We had a fabulous tour of duty there, including lots of traveling. After that, Bill was assigned to the Air Force Academy where he coached the Air Force Academy Skeet and Trap team. The boys and I stayed in Colorado Springs at year five, while Bill went off to Korea for a year. Bergstrom AFB, in Austin and Nellis AFB in Las Vegas were our next two assignments. When Bill retired from the Air Force, we moved to the mountains in southern Utah for five years. Then when our son Chris and his wife moved to Texas, we followed suit and moved to Georgetown, TX, just north of Austin. It wasn't long before we found that we missed the mountains, so in 2004 we built our cabin in Cloudcroft after visiting friends there and finding out what a wonderful community it is. |
